Top island destination in Europe according to Travel and Leisure magazine and
among the 10 top destinations worldwide, it is a magical island that should be
in your itenerary in Greece. It was around 1600 BC when the volcano erupted
and caused the old island called Stroggili (circle in Greek) to partialy sink
and left three parts as the islands we see today : Santorini (or Thera, Thira),
Thirassia and Aspronissi. Several eruptions between the second century BC and
the 20th century created two more volcanic islands Palaia (old) and Nea (new)
Kameni (burnt). The result is a nature miracle and the beauty of the
Caldera view is the most breathtaking one on Earth. Thousands of visitors discovered
the small island in the late 70's and turned its agricultural nature into the
turist paradise we see today. It has always had a wild mysterious beauty.
Even Jules Vernes felt for its charm when around 1800 visited the island during
a mild eruption of the volcano and wrote the well Known Mysterious island of his
the next year. | | | |
